Redesigning PTSD With Empirical Data: Implications for DSM-V

Darrel Regier, MD, MPH
Executive Director, American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education and Director, Division of Research, American Psychiatric Association, Arlington, Virginia, USA

The overarching goal of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental disorders (DSM-V) is to present the most valid and clinically useful diagnostic classification system to date. The DSM-V Task Force and Work Group members are especially mindful of cross-cutting dimensional factors that are not included in existing diagnostic criteria for all diagnoses including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and acute stress disorder (ASD). Of particular interest will be establishing a “living document” framework for incorporating new etiologic information on gene-environment (traumatic exposure) interactions that will guide future revisions of the DSM-V.
